📝 1. Ways to Obtain Italian Citizenship
By descent (Jure Sanguinis)
If you have Italian ancestors, you may be eligible if you can prove an uninterrupted bloodline and no loss of citizenship along the way.
By marriage
If you’re married to an Italian citizen, you can apply after:
- 2 years of legal residence in Italy (reduced to 1 year if you have children together)
- 3 years if living abroad (reduced to 1.5 years with children)
By naturalisation (residency)
After legally residing in Italy:
- 10 years for non-EU citizens
- 4 years for EU citizens
- 5 years for refugees
- 3 years for descendants of Italian citizens
📂 2. Required Documents (examples)
- Birth certificate (translated and legalised with apostille)
- Criminal record certificate from your country of origin
- Valid residence permit and proof of residency in Italy
- Italian tax code (Codice Fiscale)
- Passport copy
- Italian language certificate (minimum level B1)

- Submit your application online at the Ministry of the Interior’s portal:https://portaleservizi.dlci.interno.it
- Register with your SPID or CIE (electronic ID)
- Upload all documents in PDF format
- Pay the state fee (€250)
- You will be contacted by the Prefecture for an interview
⏳ 4. Processing Times
- The process can take 12 to 36 months
- You can track your application status online
- All documents must be kept valid during the process
